LONDON MARKET WORDINGS
Overview of the market
A noticeable development since 2020 has been the number of Insurance firms that created a
dedicated Wordings function, and how this created opportunities for those individuals working
in Wordings to progress to a Head of Wordings role.
This has resulted in a challenge in finding individuals with a credible level of experience to fulfil
the roles in a Wordings team, supporting the Head of Wordings, as most of the individuals who
would be seen as having credible experience for a Senior Wordings specialist role are seeing
their next move as being to a Head of Wordings role, if they aren’t already employed as the
Head of Wordings.

Demand for individuals who can work closely with Underwriters and Brokers on the design of
products is strong. It is well qualified individuals who communicate well and combine a strong
technical track record with a commercial approach who are most sought after.
The noticeable trend is for firms to seek to hire individuals into their Wordings teams that the
Underwriters or Brokers will choose to partner closely with on the development of Wordings,
Products and on Coverage, individuals who they will want to introduce to clients. This more
proactive focus within Wordings roles is leading to some talented individuals from Claims,
Broking, Underwriting and Legal backgrounds considering a move into Wordings as a positive
career move.
Areas of greatest talent shortage
Wordings is rarely an area we see individuals at the start of their career choosing. As a result
there is a shortage of individuals in wordings roles earning below £50,000. It is at levels above
this that we see individuals from broader insurance background moving into such roles.
